Competitive advantage by optical measuring system

24 June 2011 - In the April issue of a German journal called "BänderBlecheRohre" the German company Tube Technology Systems AG (TTS) describes the enormous advantages of an optical measuring system in comparison to mechanical gauges.

Before TTS bought AICON’s TubeInspect the produced coated steel pipes had to be sent directly for processing to the bend centers of the automobile manufacturers. There, the steel pipes were tested by mechanical gauges. Per vehicle type, generally several gauges were needed - a time consuming and cost-intensive method. In addition, there was no auxiliary device that could accelerate the setup of the bending machine. Some fittings could even be tested on the finished car body only.

After careful deliberation and as part of a reorientation of the company, the TTS AG decided to add the bending process to its own portfolio. By using TubeInspect the interim step at the car manufacturer is no longer necessary and thus the TTS AG has clear advantages over its competitors. Now the production and testing of the pipes need only a fraction of the time compared with using of mechanical gauges. A further advantage of TubeInspect is saving of cost-intensive and generally time-consuming coordinate measuring technology for samplings. Optical testing allows the coordinates of the bending points to be determined within seconds. In addition, the new system of measurement is more accurate and reliable than using conventional coordinate measurement technology.
