TRW provides system for test station applications

MoveInspect System

“We put the thinking in safety systems.” – That is one motto of TRW Automotive. TRW maintains a technology center in Alfdorf, located in Southern Germany, which is specialized on occupant protection like air bags and seatbelt systems. Tests of new developments are taking place as well, e.g. within the scope of airbag and sled tests. 

At the beginning of 2012 TRW brings a new test station into service, on which so-called ejection mitigation tests are performed, which are required by the new US regulation FMVSS226. TRW equips this ultra-modern test station with AICON’s MoveInspect System, a camera based measurement system with a hand-held probe.

In the future, MoveInspect will be used for the alignment of the objects relevant for the test: Points of impact on the measuring object should be marked and documented. The high speed cameras, which record the test, have to be aligned to the body. Also, the body has to be adjusted to the test station. In short: MoveInspect should guarantee the right position of the recording high-speed cameras on the test station necessary for every test. That is elementary to make the test reproducible. Thanks to the „Dynamic Referencing“-function, the DPS system knows all the time, where the objects are located in space. Due to the fact that the system uses optical reference points, all measurements are automatically transformed into the object-coordinate system. The user receives information about the actual position of the object in real time and can see from the graphical display in which direction he has to move the object to get the wanted position. “That’s not only practical, it saves time while preparing the test und improves the test quality.” says Jürgen Hirth, head of the crash test facility at TRW in Alfdorf.
